crush 2007 update

Zinfandel Festival Paso RoblesMost of our days begin in the vineyard at sunrise.  These are cool, foggy Paso Robles mornings that characterize the harvest season and make this such a special area for grape growing.  We’re now several weeks into our ’07 vintage, and although it started a little bit early this year, ripening has been slowed again by a cooling trend in the weather.  Our first lots of wine are already in the barrel, and it seems that the rest of the fruit will start to trickle in later this week.  Based on what we’ve seen thus far, it looks to be a rather slim harvest, but one of fantastic quality.  With vineyard yields down, mostly due to small berry and cluster size, the grapes are developing incredible concentration and intensity.  So while there might not be a lot of wine this year, what we do make will be extraordinary!  Amy Butler, Winemaker

NOVEMBER 15TH, NEW RELEASES, LET’S TALK!

Zinfandel Festival Paso RoblesNovember is wine release month for us and you know the old motto, “no wine will be drunk before it’s time”…and it’s time!  The 2005 reds are finally ready after being barrel aged for 18 months in French oak.  Then we bottle aged for an additional 6 months to rest and regroup after a gentle but sometimes stressful bottling process…we are talking about the wines.  All of this extra time helps us produce a more balanced, velvety textured, food friendly style wine that we, and we hope you, have come to love.  The 2006 Whites are on a similar track as the reds, but need much less barrel aging then their counter parts.  The whites are barrel fermented and aged in neutral French oak before being bottled.  After bottling, the aging continues an additional four months before their release date.

Our Reds
This year, we have three exciting new additions to our ‘04/’05 line up, all from the Paso Robles AVA (American Viticultural Area).  Two alluring new red Rhône blends called “Le Thief” and “Vertigo”, and a syrah cuvée (Syrah Sélectionné) from six stellar Westside Paso Robles vineyards that will blow your socks right off.

2005 “Le Thief” is one of a pair of new blends for 2005.  The idea was to showcase, in a blend, how the dominant variety, Syrah, could be enhanced by the addition of small amounts of Grenache and Mourvèdre.  We began with a stellar selection of fruit-driven Syrahs made even richer with the addition of sturdy, smoky Mourvèdre and bright, succulent Grenache.  $30.00/bottle

The second of the new blends is 2005 “Vertigo”.  Grenache-dominant, the wine is enhanced with earthy, woodsy Syrah and smoky Mourvèdre to create a European-styled wine with plenty of elegance and refinement.  $30.00/bottle

2005 “Syrah Sélectionné”   Each year we make Syrah from some of the finest vineyards on Paso Robles’ famed Westside.   To create this wine, we selected the very best barrels from each lot, blending them to showcase the finer points of each vineyard.  The resulting Syrah is intensely concentrated yet elegant, with remarkable balance and a long, firm finish.

Showing a concentrated garnet color, the Syrah Sélectionné truly embodies the best of Paso Robles Syrah.  Bursting with jam-like fruit, the nose is reminiscent of perfectly ripened red currant and blackberry balanced by a loamy, woodsy quality. Soft, yet well-structured on the palate, this wine can easily be enjoyed upon release, but will stand up to cellar aging for at least another decade.  $32.00/bottle

Our Whites
The only change to our fresh, crisp white wines is our 2006 Blanc du Rhône, and the change is… we made it even better!  This year we added Grenache Blanc to our existing beautiful ’05 blend of Roussanne, Marsanne & Viognier.  The addition of Grenache Blanc helps maintain the crispness of this soft, silky wine.  These four varietals marry beautifully, mingling their characteristics to show fruity, spicy and mineral aromas on the nose, along with a small amount of new French oak, to form an incredibly full, creamy, vanilla-laced palate.  Aromas of apple blossom, mango, and honey continue through the flavors, balancing the richness with a long, persistent finish.  $29.00/bottle
